MEMORIAL VISIT TO HAJLA: REMEMBERING HALIT NURKOVIĆ
Six sisters, daughters of Halit Nurković, a taxi driver from Rozaj who disappeared on July 24, 1999 in Kosovo, organized a memorial march on Hajla on Sunday and thus marked 14 years of searching for the truth about their father's fate.
Several dozen citizens, relatives and friends of the Nurković family gathered in the town square at 1 pm, from where they started a walk about two kilometers long, during which they also crossed part of the road along which Halit drove his last drive to Peja. In memory of Halit, his sons-in-law, the four-year Australian record holder in the marathon, Safet Sani Badić and Refik Ličina, ran the section from the town square to the top of Mount Hajle.
Mountaineers from Kosovo joined the memorial procession from Rožaj in Uljari. Together, they continued their walk to Hajla, from where they returned to the Gropa mountain lodge, where a round table was organized and a discussion was held on possible forms of safe and anonymous delivery of information about missing persons. After that, there was a memorial part - the memory of Halit Nirković, which was talked about by family members through presentations of video works. After the joint iftar, there was a gathering with the accordion, which was Halit's great love.
"The aim of this event is not only to remind that the fate of Halit Nurković is still unsolved fourteen years after his disappearance, but also to remember all the persons who disappeared during the conflict in Kosovo, as well as to point out the problems faced by families who are unable to access the truth about the suffering of their loved ones", the Nurković sisters pointed out.
In the hope that this memorial march, as well as the meeting of Kosovo and Rožaj mountaineers, will send a voice from the peaks of Hajla, and that this voice will be recognized and heard by those who know the truth about the fate of Halit Nurković, his daughters want to convey that they deeply believe that nobility and feeling justice to overcome the indecision of those who witnessed what happened to their father, and encourage them to pass on what they know to the family.
The desire of the Nurković sisters is only to find out the truth about their father's fate, find his body and bury him with dignity, in accordance with tradition and customs.
The coordinator of the memorial hike was the Hajla Mountaineering Society.
